Mississippi Casinos can build on land
The governor of Mississippi, Haley Barbour, gave the casinos the OK to rebuild on land this time, up to 800 feet inland. Casinos were legalized in the state 15 years ago but were subjected to operating in the Gulf of Mexico and the Mississippi river. Religious groups who do not approve of gambling tried to keep the casinos offshore but to no avail.
The rebuilding of casinos will boost the economy and create new jobs for many people. Before hurricane Katrina hit the state, casino revenues exceeded over $500 000 a day. Casino operators are pleased with the announcement and are ready to start building. Many gaming companies such as Harrah's, Bally's and Boyd Gaming lost their casinos in the hurricane.
