Betfair looking for new licence
Though already licensed in the UK, remote betting exchange Betfair is trying to get a Tasmanian license, and according to a number of sources, the company is likely to get it.
Should Betfair obtain a license from the Tasmanian government, punters in the remaining Australian states could legally place bets with Betfair, either over the telephone or internet.
The Australian gambling market is currently dominated by TABCorp and Betfair's flirtation with the industry has many locals anxious.
Some fear that the gambling industry is not capable of adequately supporting two major betting services, and the industry as a whole would suffer as a result of Betfair's British invasion.
Premier Lennon has promised not be swayed by TABCorp's threats and has said that he will remain open to the option of licensing Betfair.
